Rio Tinto Alcan Yarwun Cogeneration Facility
The cogeneration facility is based on an Alstom 13E2 gas turbine and HRSG, generating approximately 160MW of electrical power and 300 tonnes/hr of steam. Steam generation can be augmented with duct firing installed in the HRSG inlet duct. The facility will provide steam and electricity to the refinery, with surplus electricity being sold into the National Electricity Market.
The gas fired cogeneration plant will achieve a 26% reduction in carbon intensity for the overall expanded Yarwun operation, the investment demonstrating that Rio Tinto Alcan is serious about cutting greenhouse gas emissions. Rio Tinto have engaged Silcar as experts in the operation and maintenance of gas turbine power generation plant to support the site team during operational establishment, commissioning and initial operation of the facility.
