Remote Operations Centre (ROC) Enablement Project – Fibre Optic Installation Through Nine Mine Sites

In early 2008 Rio Tinto had begun construction of a large remote operations centre in Perth near the International Airport. The centre would have much of Rio’s daily mining and shipping operations transferred to it from the mine sites, once completed. To enable the operations centre to have enough data to control its local operations the fibre networks on many of their mine sites needed to be expanded and upgraded.

Silcar Communications was awarded a contract to provide a detailed design and to supply, install and commission multiple fibre links, in different locations on nine different sites scattered throughout the Pilbara region and along WA’s north-west coast.

Fibre was installed underground in conduit and sub-duct along power cable trays to loaders and stackers, through crushing and grading plants and in cable trays alongside conveyors at significant height above ground. Building entries, racking, terminations and commissioning occurred in the communications rooms, office areas, power stations, ore car-dumper control stations and sub-stations with the Silcar work-force gaining multiple site accreditations across all areas of ore production throughout the Pilbara.
