Loy Yang Power Station & Mine

Loy Yang A is a 2000 megawatt thermal power station with an adjacent coal mine located in the Latrobe Valley in Victoria. Loy Yang A with four 500 megawatt turbines is the largest mission critical power station in Victoria and also owns and operates a 31 MTPA coal mine, the largest open cut coal mine in Australia.  There is 168,000 million tonnes of accessible brown coal beneath the Latrobe Valley which is the feedstock for both Loy Yang A and Loy Yang B power station.

The mine utilises four bucket wheel excavators, each weighing approximately 5,000 tonne and capable of excavating up to 3,600 tonnes of coal per hour. Delivery to the power stations is via approximately 15k of conveyors with belt speed of 5.3m/second and drive head capacity of 4 x 970 kW. Operations commenced in the early 1980’s.
The coal is crushed in rotary crushers with capacities of 2,500 t/hr each.
