Deepdale Rail Line - Optical Fibre Link
In late 2007 Silcar Communications was awarded a contract to provide a turn-key optical fibre link along Rio Tinto’s remote Deepdale rail line between various production and ore transport sites. Also known as Mesa J, the mine lies in Western Australia’s resource-rich Pilbara region and produces over 7 million tonnes of iron ore a year.
The project required laying 143km of optical fibre along a large section of Rio Tinto's Robe River railway line which stretches from the Mesa J mine site to the company’s port and crushing facilities at Cape Lambert. Silcar was also required to provide all associated power, transmission equipment, remote solar-powered communications buildings and even design and refurbishment of older communications areas in existing buildings to service the new optical fibre link.
