Approach to Safety Management

Silcar people are exposed to the range of hazards in the respective industries and places at which they work. There can be a wide variation from one Silcar operation to another in nature of the work and the associated safety risks.

Each Silcar operation works with safety systems that have been developed for the industry and, often, specific to a locality where Silcar may be required to operate in accordance with specific Client safety systems. The pattern and order of the Silcar organisation in oriented around Client and industry requirements governed by the constant reference points of Silcar's Safety Values, Policies, Guiding Principles and Standards.

The general approach to safety management is:

  1. Develop Silcar safety systems for the operation or work within the requirements of Client safety systems.
  2. Supplement Client systems as necessary to ensure compliance with Silcar Safety Standards and the AS/NZS 4801 Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems standard.
  3. Document and formalise the approach to safety for a given operation with a written Safety Plan based on a risk management approach with particular focus on high consequence hazards.
  4. Use internal review and external auditors to audit the Safety Plan against the required standard and to audit compliance with the Safety Plan by the Silcar operation.
  5. Promote safety improvement on an operation by operation basis.
  6. Share improvements in practices and tools across Silcar.
